Buying Ammo Online: What Holds Up and What Doesn't

Buying ammo online is simple once you know the handful of rules experienced buyers keep repeating. Ask around on forums like r/ammo and you will hear the same advice over and over: compare prices, count the shipping, and check out a store before you hand it your card. Here is what holds up, where the one-line answers fall short, and what to read next.

The rules that hold up

  • Use a price aggregator, then check the store.

AmmoSeek is the usual starting point for comparing prices across stores. The step people skip comes next: before a first order, look up what past buyers say about that store. Find the deal, check the store, then buy.

  • Compare delivered cost, not the sticker.

A low price per round can turn into a bad deal once shipping is added, and some sites hide shipping until you make an account. Set the aggregator's shipping filter, or do the math yourself: price plus shipping, divided by rounds.

  • Fast shipping is worth something.

The lowest listed price can come from a seller that takes weeks to ship. A fair price from a fast, established store beats chasing the bottom listing.

  • Real stock matters.

One buyer got a restock text, and the item sold out again before he could check out. A store that lists only what is on the shelf saves you a cancelled order.

  • Protect your card.

One buyer said his card was compromised after orders from sites he found through a price aggregator. The advice he got back: check each store first, stick to stores with a track record, and use a virtual or single-use card number for online orders.

  • Know your state first.

Buyers in Massachusetts and California describe stores that will not ship to them, or dealer transfer fees on top of the order. Check where a store ships before you build a cart.

Where the one-line answers fall short

  • "Just use AmmoSeek" is half an answer. An aggregator shows who lists a price. It does not vouch for the seller, so you still have to check the store.
  • Online is not always cheaper. Several shooters say in-store sales at a big-box sporting goods chain, stacked with store discounts and in-store pickup, beat online prices for 9mm once shipping is counted.
  • Free shipping is not free. Ammo is heavy, and fuel costs push shipping up. When a store ships for free, the cost sits in the price per round, so compare delivered totals the same way at every store.
  • Steel case is not a gun killer. New buyers often ask whether steel-case ammo will ruin a gun. Experienced shooters are calmer: steel-case 7.62x39 is normal for AK-pattern rifles, any extra wear takes a very large round count, and the real limits are indoor range rules and the fact that steel cases cannot be reloaded.
  • "Bulk" means different things. A 1,000-round case or a pallet? For most buyers bulk means a case, and the per-round savings come from spreading boxing and shipping costs across more rounds.

Who we are

Heisenberg Ammo is a warehouse-style ammunition store in Phoenix that also sells online. We stock case and bulk packs, we are an AmmoSeek Certified Retailer, and shipping is UPS Ground charged by weight. Browse all ammunition.

Good to know

You must be 21 or older to order. We sell ammunition, not guns. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, and some states are restricted. A 3% technology fee applies to online orders paid by card; card payments in the shop do not carry it. All sales are final. Details are in our shipping policy.

Buying ammo online: questions

Is there a list of trusted ammo websites?

Not one official list. The advice you hear most is to compare prices on AmmoSeek, then look up what past buyers say about a store before your first order.

How do I compare shipping costs on ammo?

Compare delivered cost per round: price plus shipping, divided by rounds. One buyer's approach is a couple of big orders a year instead of many small ones, so shipping is spread across more rounds.

Is it legal to buy ammo online?

For adults in most of the United States, yes, but some states and cities restrict shipping or require a license or a dealer pickup. Our shipping policy lists the states we can and cannot ship to. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is the Reddit consensus on buying ammo online?

The same few rules come up again and again: compare on an aggregator, count shipping, check out the store, protect your card, and know your state's rules first. Experienced shooters take a calmer view of steel case than new ones do.
