Is Ammo Cheaper Online or In Store? How to Do the Math
Is ammo cheaper online or in store? It depends on shipping, and the math is easy once you see it. Plenty of shooters on r/Firearms say they grab their 9mm at a big-box store during sales, while others order cases online from stores that ship free above an order minimum. Both can be right. Here is when each one wins.
When online tends to win
Case quantities
Shipping is mostly a weight charge, so it is a smaller share of a 1,000-round case than of a single box. One buyer places a couple of big orders a year and accepts the shipping.
High local prices
The buyer who started one of those threads was shopping online because his local gun shop's prices were too high.
Defensive loads
One shooter said defensive hollow points are much cheaper online, where the price of a 20-round box in a local store buys 50 rounds.
Free-shipping thresholds
Many online stores ship free above an order minimum, and some sell annual shipping memberships that pay off for frequent buyers.
When the store tends to win
One or two boxes
With shipping added, a single box online usually costs more than the same box on a local shelf.
Big-box sales
Several shooters said in-store sales at a big sporting goods chain, stacked with store-card discounts and in-store pickup, beat online prices for 9mm.
No wait
One shooter buys rifle ammo locally because it is in hand and out the door, with no waiting for a delivery.
No shipping, sometimes a cash discount
One buyer said his local shop gives a cash discount, and there is no shipping to pay.
How to compare fairly
Use the same formula everywhere: price plus shipping plus tax, divided by rounds. Two listings with the same per-round price are not the same deal if one adds shipping, and some sites hide shipping until you make an account. If the online total and the store total are close, the store wins on speed.
Where Heisenberg Ammo fits
We are both. Online, shipping is UPS Ground charged by weight; a box or two usually falls in our lightest weight tier, and a 1,000-round case of 9mm or 5.56 usually falls in the 20 to 30 lb tier. Shipping is not free except for Brass Club members. In Phoenix, you can walk in, or call to have an order set aside and pick it up, and pay no shipping. See our shipping policy and shop 9mm or 5.56 NATO.

Good to know
You must be 21 or older to order. We sell ammunition, not guns. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, and some states are restricted. A 3% technology fee applies to online orders paid by card; card payments in the shop do not carry it. All sales are final. Details are in our shipping policy.
Online vs in-store questions
Is it cheaper to buy ammo online or at a store?
For single boxes, a local store is usually cheaper once shipping is counted. For cases, online stores often win, especially above a free-shipping minimum. Compare price plus shipping plus tax, divided by rounds.
Why is shipping ammo so expensive?
Ammo is heavy, and it ships by ground as a regulated hazardous material. It cannot go by air or USPS, so the cost tracks weight and distance.
Do online ammo stores charge sales tax?
Many do, depending on where the store has to collect it. Factor tax into every comparison; the checkout total shows it before you pay.
Is an ammo shipping membership worth it?
It depends on how much you buy. A membership pays off once your yearly spend passes the break-even point; one buyer reached it with a single big order, and another put it much higher.
