Steel vs Brass Ammo: What Experienced Shooters Say

Steel vs brass is one of the oldest arguments in shooting, and on r/ammo it has run for years. Most experienced answers we read agree: steel case from a reputable maker works in most guns built for it, brass is the default for reloaders and many indoor ranges, and the price gap decides the rest. Here is the short version.

What the answers agree on

  • Range rules are the biggest real limit.

The most common reason to skip steel is that many indoor ranges do not allow it. The reason is practical: ranges sweep up and recycle brass, and steel cases mixed in make that harder. Call your range before you buy a case.

  • Steel cases are not reloadable.

For reloaders, brass is the only practical choice. If you do not reload, this does not matter.

  • AK-pattern rifles run steel.

When a new AK owner asked, the answers were clear: steel-case 7.62x39 is normal for the platform, brass 7.62x39 is less common and costs more, and any extra wear takes so many rounds that the ammo savings would pay for replacement parts.

  • Brand matters more than case material.

One shooter said every gun he owns runs steel, aluminum and brass cases alike, others said steel shoots fine in their pistols, and the advice was to buy from a reputable manufacturer.

  • Know what you are holding.

A new buyer worried that shiny cases he bought were steel. Nickel-plated brass and aluminum cases look similar, and a magnet settles it: it sticks to steel, not to brass or aluminum.

Where the debate gets overstated

The idea that steel case will quickly ruin a gun shows up far more in questions than in experienced answers. The fair version is narrower: steel cases do not seal the chamber quite like brass, some shooters see more fouling, and a few firearm makers advise against steel case, so check your manual. Also, steel case is not the same as a steel-core or bimetal-jacketed bullet. Some ranges check bullets with a magnet for that reason, separate from any rule about cases.

Steel vs brass questions

Is steel case ammo bad for your gun?

Mostly no. The common view in the threads we read is that steel case from a reputable maker is fine in guns designed for it, especially AK-pattern rifles, and that any extra wear takes a very large round count. Check your firearm's manual, since a few makers advise against it.

Why do some ranges ban steel case ammo?

Mostly because ranges collect and recycle brass, and steel cases mixed in make that harder. Separately, some ranges check bullets with a magnet to keep steel-core rounds off their targets.

Can you reload steel case ammo?

Not in practice. Steel cases are generally treated as single use, which is why reloaders stick to brass.

Is steel case ammo cheaper than brass?

Usually per round, most of all in 7.62x39, where brass is less common. Compare delivered cost per round, with shipping included, before deciding.
