Is It Safe to Buy Ammo Online? How to Check a Store

Yes, buying ammo online is safe from an established store, as long as you run a few quick checks first. "Is this site legit?" comes up so often on gun forums that one large forum posts an automatic reply pointing to a guide on spotting scam stores. Here are the checks worth running before your first order with anyone, us included.

Six checks before your first order

  • Look up the store's reputation.

Search the store name plus the word reddit and read what past buyers report.

  • Look at the site's age.

In one thread about an unfamiliar site, the main doubt one commenter raised was that the domain was only about six weeks old yet showed the stock of a much larger store.

  • Ask whether the prices and stock are believable.

If the prices and stock look too good to be true for the market, slow down.

  • Check the address.

Look up the listed address on a map. In that same thread, it turned out to be a discount site run by an established shop, which one buyer confirmed from an order.

  • Read the shipping before checkout.

High shipping is where cheap-looking listings make their money.

  • Allow for slow shippers.

Slow is not the same as a scam. In one thread about an online store, a buyer said his order arrived fine but shipping took a long time. That matters if you need ammo by a date.

Protect your card

One buyer said his card was compromised several times after ordering from sites he found through a price aggregator. The replies he got: most buyers have no problems when they check stores first, and a single-use or virtual card number, which many card issuers and privacy services offer, means a breach at one store exposes one number instead of your real card.

Is it legal to buy ammo online?

For adults in most states, yes. Some states add rules: California routes ammunition through licensed vendors, and states such as New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Connecticut and New Jersey have permit or point-of-sale requirements. At Heisenberg Ammo, checkout only accepts addresses we can legally ship to. See can ammo be shipped to my state. This is general information, not legal advice.

How we handle the same checks

  • We are a Phoenix store with a walk-in shop, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Our address is in the site footer and on the contact page, and you can call or text 480-623-4515.
  • We are an AmmoSeek Certified Retailer.
  • Shipping is charged by weight and shown at checkout before you pay.
  • Every listing shows in stock or out of stock, so you are not ordering something we do not have.
  • Read our returns policy and shipping policy, including how lost or damaged packages are handled, before you order.

Good to know

You must be 21 or older to order. We sell ammunition, not guns. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, and some states are restricted. A 3% technology fee applies to online orders paid by card; card payments in the shop do not carry it. All sales are final. Details are in our shipping policy.

Online ammo safety questions

Is it safe to buy ammo online? (Reddit's take)

Mostly yes. Plenty of shooters buy online without trouble; most of the problems people report come from unfamiliar sites they did not check first. Stick to established stores, run the checks above, and use a virtual card number.

How do I know if an online ammo store is legit?

Look up what past buyers say about the store, check how long the site has existed, confirm the address is a real business, and read the shipping cost before you pay. Prices far below every other store are a warning sign.

Can my card be stolen buying ammo online?

Any online store can be breached, ammo or not. The usual advice is to buy from stores with a track record and to use a virtual or single-use card number, so one breach exposes one number.

Do you need ID to buy ammo online?

It depends on the store and the state. At Heisenberg Ammo, you confirm you are 21 or older when you enter the site, that confirmation is saved with your order, and pickup customers bring ID. See do you need ID to buy ammo.
