Best 9mm Self-Defense Ammo 2027: Top Picks
For most people carrying a 9mm in 2027, a bonded or proven jacketed hollow point such as Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST or Hornady Critical Duty is the strongest choice, in a weight your pistol runs reliably. Pick one load, prove it feeds in your gun, and carry the same load you practice with.

Top picks for 2027
1. Speer Gold Dot 9mm Luger +P 124 grain GDHP (53617). Speer's bonded hollow point: the lead core is bonded to the jacket so the two hold together on impact. Speer lists a 124 grain bullet at 1,220 fps from a 4-inch test barrel, a nickel-plated case and a sealed primer. Speer says the Gold Dot line has earned the trust of law enforcement worldwide. It suits modern pistols rated for +P where you want a mid-weight bullet with more speed. We stock it: Speer Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm +P 124 grain, in 50, 250, 500 and 1,000-round packs.
2. Speer Gold Dot 9mm Luger 147 grain GDHP (53619). The same bonded Gold Dot construction in a heavier bullet at standard pressure. Speer's law enforcement listing gives 990 fps from a 4-inch test barrel. It suits shooters who want a heavy bullet and do not want to run +P. We stock it: Speer Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm 147 grain, in the same 50 to 1,000-round packs.
3. Federal Personal Defense HST 9mm 147 grain (P9HST2S). Federal's HST jacketed hollow point. Federal lists 1,000 fps from a 4-inch test barrel, 20 rounds per box, and says the load performs well in the FBI test protocol that law enforcement uses to select duty ammunition. It suits anyone who wants a widely carried standard-pressure 147 grain load. We do not stock this load.
4. Hornady Critical Duty 9mm Luger +P 135 grain FlexLock (90226). A tipped bullet with a band that locks the jacket and core together. Hornady lists 1,070 fps from a 4-inch test barrel, 25 rounds per box, and says it gives consistent performance through all FBI test barriers. In April 2018 Hornady announced that the FBI chose this load as its handgun service ammunition. It suits full-size pistols rated for +P. We do not stock this load.
5. Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Luger 115 grain FTX (90250). Hornady's personal-protection line, with a soft tip meant to stop the hollow point clogging on heavy clothing. Hornady lists 1,135 fps from a 4-inch test barrel and 25 rounds per box. Hornady aims Critical Defense at concealed-carry guns and Critical Duty at duty guns that may need to defeat barriers. It suits small carry pistols. We do not stock this load.
How we picked
Picks are based on manufacturer specifications, published standards from SAAMI, FBI-protocol statements only where the manufacturer itself publishes them, law-enforcement adoption only where it is publicly documented, and long-running shooter consensus. We did not run our own ballistic tests for this page. Every velocity and spec here is the maker's published figure, usually from a test barrel, so results from your own gun will differ.
How to choose 9mm self-defense ammo
- Reliability comes first. Fire enough of your chosen load to know it feeds, fires and ejects in your pistol and every carry magazine.
- Use +P only if your pistol maker approves it. SAAMI sets a maximum average pressure of 35,000 psi for standard 9mm Luger and 38,500 psi for 9mm Luger +P, and says +P belongs only in guns designed and recommended for it. See 9mm +P vs standard.
- Weight is a preference, not a rule. 115, 124 and 147 grain loads are all carried. Choose the one your gun runs and you shoot accurately. See 9mm bullet weights.
- Hollow points for carry, full metal jacket for practice. The reasons are in FMJ vs hollow point. We do not stock 9mm FMJ range ammo right now.
- Know the rules where you carry. For plain facts, see Arizona ammo laws. This page is not legal advice.
Buying 9mm defense ammo in Phoenix
Both Gold Dot loads are on the shelf at our Phoenix warehouse, listed in 9mm Luger. You can pick up in Phoenix Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with ID. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, charged by weight and never free. Check where we ship for state limits. You must be 21 or older to order.
Arizona heat matters for carry ammo. SAAMI advises keeping ammunition cool and dry and not leaving it in a vehicle in direct sun for long periods. If your carry rounds have sat in a hot car all summer, replace them with fresh ones, and do not fire any ammo whose condition you doubt; ask the maker first. More on the load itself in our Speer Gold Dot guide and 9mm ammo guide.
9mm self-defense ammo questions
Is +P 9mm better for self-defense?
Not automatically. +P runs at higher pressure for more speed, and many modern pistols are rated for it, but a standard-pressure hollow point that your gun runs every time is a sound choice too. Check your pistol's manual first.
Should I carry 124 grain or 147 grain 9mm?
Both are widely carried. 124 grain loads are lighter and faster, while 147 grain loads are heavier and slower. Pick the weight that feeds reliably and that you can shoot accurately in your pistol.
Do you sell Federal HST or Hornady Critical Duty?
No. We do not stock Federal HST or Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defense right now. Our 9mm defense stock is Speer Gold Dot LE Duty in 124 grain +P and 147 grain.
Can I practice with Gold Dot?
Yes. Our Gold Dot comes in packs up to 1,000 rounds, so you can shoot enough of your actual carry load to confirm it runs in your gun, then do most other practice with cheaper FMJ.
