9mm Ammo Guide: Grain Weights, +P and Duty Hollow Points
This 9mm ammo guide explains the cartridge, the common bullet weights, what +P means, and how to choose between practice and carry ammunition. It also lists the 9mm we stock at our Phoenix warehouse. Right now that is Speer Gold Dot LE Duty hollow points, kept by the box and by the case, with live counts and a 360-degree spin of the real box on every product page.
What 9mm Luger is
9mm Luger, also sold as 9x19mm Parabellum, was designed by Georg Luger in the early 1900s and is now the most widely used pistol cartridge in the world. Most police departments and militaries issue it. Shooters like it because recoil is manageable, magazines hold a lot of rounds, and nearly every pistol maker builds guns for it. 9mm Luger is not interchangeable with 9mm Makarov, .380 ACP (sometimes labeled 9mm Kurz or 9mm Short) or 9x21mm. Match the box to the marking on your barrel or slide.
115, 124 and 147 grain
Grain is the weight of the bullet. One grain is 1/7000 of a pound. Three weights cover most 9mm:
- 115 grain: the lightest common weight and the usual range load. It is fast and has a sharp recoil impulse.
- 124 grain: the middle weight, often chosen to match NATO-style ball and many duty loads.
- 147 grain: heavy and slower, often subsonic, with a recoil impulse many shooters describe as more of a push. It is popular for suppressed pistols and some duty programs.
Our 9mm grain weights answer goes into point of impact and recoil in more detail.
What +P means
+P marks ammunition loaded to a higher pressure than the standard specification for the cartridge, for more velocity. Most modern 9mm pistols are rated for +P, but not all. Check the owner's manual or ask the maker. +P adds some wear over time, so many owners carry +P and do most of their practice with standard-pressure ammunition. +P+ is a different, unstandardized category and is not what we sell.
Full metal jacket vs hollow point
A full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet keeps its shape and is the common, lower-cost practice round. A jacketed hollow point (JHP) has a cavity in the nose designed to expand on impact, which is why it is the standard choice for self-defense and law enforcement duty. See FMJ vs hollow point for the full comparison.
The 9mm we stock
- Speer Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm +P 124 grain GDHP (53617): the +P duty load, in 50-round boxes up to 1,000-round cases.
- Speer Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm 147 grain GDHP (53619): standard pressure, heavy bullet, same pack sizes.
Gold Dot bullets use a jacket bonded to the lead core, so the two stay together as the bullet expands. "LE Duty" is the law-enforcement packaging line. Range FMJ comes and goes on our shelf, so check the 9mm Luger category for what is listed today. Duty loads are also grouped under law enforcement.
Choosing carry ammo and practice ammo
Pick one carry load and stay with it. Before you trust it, shoot enough of it through your own pistol and your own magazines to know it feeds, fires and ejects every time. Many instructors suggest at least a couple hundred rounds. Buying carry ammo by the case is what makes that test affordable, and it means your practice and carry rounds come from the same lot. For practice, pick a range load with a similar bullet weight so the sights land in about the same place.

9mm ammo questions
Is 124 grain +P or 147 grain better for carry?
Both are mainstream duty choices, and the right one is the one your pistol runs reliably and you shoot accurately. The 124 grain +P is faster with a sharper recoil impulse. The 147 grain is slower and many shooters find it softer. Shoot both in your own pistol if you can, then commit to one.
Can I shoot +P ammo in any 9mm pistol?
No. Use +P only in a pistol its maker rates for +P. Most current service-size pistols are, but some older, compact or lightweight models are not. When in doubt, use standard-pressure ammunition such as the 147 grain Gold Dot.
Is 9mm Luger the same as 9x19 and 9mm Parabellum?
Yes. 9mm Luger, 9x19mm and 9mm Parabellum are names for the same cartridge, and any of them on the box will fit a pistol marked with any of the others. 9mm Makarov, .380 ACP and 9x21 are different cartridges.
How long does 9mm hollow point ammo last?
Factory ammunition stored cool and dry can stay reliable for many years. Carry rounds have a harder life: rechambering the same round over and over can push the bullet deeper into the case, so rotate your carry ammo into practice regularly. See how long ammo lasts in storage.
