FMJ vs Hollow Point Ammo
What is the difference between FMJ and hollow point ammo?
A full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet has a lead core wrapped in a harder metal shell, with a solid rounded nose. It feeds smoothly, penetrates deeply and is the usual choice for range practice and training. A hollow point has a cavity in the nose designed to expand on impact, which is why it is used in self-defense and law-enforcement loads. Practice with ammo that feels and cycles like what you carry, and confirm that your firearm feeds it reliably. Both types are made in the common pistol and rifle calibers, and the right pick depends on the job. Shooting a few magazines of your chosen load before you rely on it is a sound habit.
