Speer Gold Dot Ammo: Bonded Hollow Points and the LE Duty Line
Speer Gold Dot is a line of bonded jacketed hollow point handgun ammunition made by Speer. Its jacket is bonded to the lead core during manufacture, so the two stay together as the bullet expands. Speer calls Gold Dot the first handgun ammunition loaded with true bonded-core bullets. At our Phoenix warehouse we stock two Gold Dot loads right now, both 9mm Luger from the LE Duty line.
How Gold Dot bullets are built
Most conventional hollow points are a lead core pressed into a separate copper alloy cup, the jacket. If that kind of bullet hits something hard on the way, the jacket and core can come apart, and the bullet loses weight and penetration. Gold Dot is built differently. Speer starts with an alloyed lead core and adds the copper jacket with its Uni-Cor process, an electrochemical method that builds the jacket onto the core rather than wrapping a cup around it. Speer says the process nearly eliminates core and jacket separation and gives the jacket a uniform thickness, which helps accuracy.
The hollow point cavity is then formed in two stages. According to Speer, the first stage sets how far the bullet can expand and the second controls how fast it expands, and the cavity is tuned for each caliber and bullet weight. The nose is finished smooth so it feeds reliably in semi-automatic pistols.
The rest of the cartridge is conventional quality. Speer lists nickel-plated brass cases, which resist corrosion and slide smoothly in the chamber, CCI primers, and clean-burning propellants chosen for consistent pressure. Speer also says Gold Dot is tested against the FBI protocol for service handgun ammunition, which measures penetration, expansion and retained weight in bare gelatin and behind barriers.
What LE Duty means
Speer sells Gold Dot in two main packaging lines. Gold Dot Personal Protection is the retail line, usually in small boxes. LE Duty is the law enforcement line, packed for agencies that buy in quantity for duty issue and qualification. The bullet design is the same Gold Dot construction. We carry LE Duty because it suits buying by the case, so you can test, practice and carry from the same lot.
The Gold Dot we stock
We stock only 9mm Gold Dot right now. We do not carry Gold Dot in .380 ACP, .40 S&W, .45 ACP or other calibers at this time.
| Load | Pressure | Speer muzzle velocity (4-inch barrel) | Packs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm 124 grain GDHP (53617) | +P | 1,220 fps | 50, 250, 500, 1,000 rounds |
| Gold Dot LE Duty 9mm 147 grain GDHP (53619) | Standard | 990 fps | 50, 250, 500, 1,000 rounds |
Shipping weights with packaging are about 1.4 pounds for 50 rounds, 7 pounds for 250, 14 pounds for 500 and 28 pounds for a 1,000-round case. Each product page shows a live count and a 360-degree spin of the actual box. The 124 grain is +P, so use it only in a pistol rated for +P. The 147 grain is standard pressure. Our 9mm +P vs standard page compares the two in detail. You can also find both under law enforcement and 9mm Luger.
How to choose a Gold Dot load
- Check your pistol first. If the manual does not rate it for +P, the 147 grain standard load is the one to use.
- Test in your own gun. Run at least a few boxes through your pistol and every magazine you carry. Look for clean feeding, firing and ejection.
- Check point of impact. 124 and 147 grain bullets can hit at slightly different heights at the same aim point. Confirm at the distances you train at.
- Commit and buy the lot. Once a load runs, buying a case means your practice and carry ammunition match.
Hollow points versus practice ball is covered in FMJ vs hollow point.
Storage, ordering and pickup
Store Gold Dot indoors in its box or an ammo can. Arizona heat is hard on ammunition, and a parked car in a Phoenix summer gets far hotter than the outside air. You must be 21 or older to order. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, charged by weight. See where we ship. Or pick up in Phoenix Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with ID. Call 480-623-4515.
Speer Gold Dot questions
What does bonded mean in Gold Dot ammo?
It means the copper jacket is fused to the lead core instead of being a separate cup around it. Speer uses an electrochemical process it calls Uni-Cor. Bonding is meant to keep the jacket and core together as the bullet expands or passes through barriers.
Is LE Duty Gold Dot different from regular Gold Dot?
LE Duty is Speer's law enforcement packaging line, sold in larger quantities. It uses the same bonded Gold Dot bullet construction. Always compare the specific part number, since loads differ by bullet weight and pressure.
Do you sell Gold Dot in .380, .40 or .45?
Not right now. We stock only the 9mm Luger Gold Dot LE Duty 124 grain +P and 147 grain loads. See our 9mm ammo guide for the caliber.
Why are Gold Dot cases silver colored?
The brass cases are nickel plated. Nickel plating resists corrosion and helps rounds chamber smoothly. More answers in our ammo FAQ.
