How Many Rounds Are in a Case of Ammo?
There is no single standard number of rounds in a case of ammo. A case is whatever the manufacturer packs into one shipping carton, and it changes by caliber and brand. A case of 12 gauge buckshot is often 250 shells, a case of .22 LR can be 1,000 or more, and a case of .50 BMG may be only 200. The table below lists the actual pack sizes and shipping weights for every load we have in stock at our Phoenix warehouse.
Box, brick, case and battle pack
- Box: the smallest retail unit. Centerfire rifle ammo usually comes 20 to a box, handgun ammo 50, shotshells 25, and .22 LR 50 or more.
- Brick: a term mostly used for .22 LR, meaning a sleeve of several 50-round boxes packed together.
- Case: the factory shipping carton, made up of a set number of boxes. Sellier & Bellot and Rio both pack their 12 gauge buckshot 25 shells to a box and 10 boxes to a case, which is 250 shells.
- Battle pack or bulk pack: a sealed bag or wrapped bundle of loose rounds, sometimes on stripper clips, often sold in place of many small boxes.
Because "case" means different things for different loads, the round count on the listing is the number to check. Weight matters too, since shipping is charged by weight.

What the table shows
Round count and weight do not track each other. A 1,000-round case of Colibri ships at 7.8 lb, while 200 rounds of .50 BMG ship at 56.0 lb. A 2,250-round MKE 5.56 pack is the largest single pack we list at 67.5 lb. Most hunting rifle loads here come as a 20-round box or a 200-round case of ten boxes.
How to choose a pack size
- Buy a box first to confirm a load feeds and groups in your firearm.
- Move to a case once you know it works, so practice and carry ammo come from the same product.
- Check the weight. A 50 lb or heavier case is a two-hand lift, and it costs more to ship than a light one.
- Have a dry, indoor place to keep it. In Phoenix, keep cases out of garages, sheds and vehicles in summer. See how long ammo lasts in storage.

Buying, shipping and pickup
You must be 21 or older to order. Orders ship UPS Ground from Phoenix within 2 business days, charged by weight. See where we ship. Heavy cases are a good reason to pick up instead: call 480-623-4515, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and bring ID.
Ammo case questions
How many rounds are in a case of 9mm?
It varies by brand. Our Speer Gold Dot 9mm loads are listed in 50, 250, 500 and 1,000-round packs, and the 1,000-round pack ships at 28.0 lb.
How many shells are in a case of 12 gauge buckshot?
Every buckshot load we stock comes as a 25-shell box or a 250-shell case, which is 10 boxes. Shipping weight for the case is 24.0 to 26.8 lb depending on the load. Our 12 gauge buckshot guide compares the loads.
Is a battle pack the same as a case?
Not always. A battle pack is a sealed bundle of loose rounds, and a case may hold several battle packs or several boxes. Go by the round count on the listing.
Can I buy just one box before buying a case?
Yes, for most loads. Every in-stock load in the table has a smaller pack except the BVAC 5.56 (500 only), the Armscor 7.62x39 (250 only) and the Precision One 7.62x39 (500 only).
