Quietest .22 LR Ammo: Aguila Colibri

The quietest .22 LR ammo you can buy is Aguila Colibri. There is no powder in the case. The primer alone pushes a 20 grain lead bullet at about 420 feet per second, so the report is closer to a pellet rifle than a .22. Backyard pest control where the neighbors are close, teaching a kid to shoot without a flinch, and indoor practice are what people buy it for.

What to know before you buy

• Rifles only, and cycle by hand. Colibri will not cycle a semi-automatic. Use a bolt action, single shot, or lever gun.
• Short barrels only. Aguila's own guidance is barrels shorter than about 18 inches. In a long barrel the bullet can stop inside the bore, so check the barrel is clear after every shot if you use one.
• Short range. It is a 10 to 25 yard cartridge. Past that the bullet drops fast.
• Still a firearm. Quiet is not harmless. Same backstop, same rules.

Louder options that still run quiet

If you need a .22 that cycles a semi-auto and stays subsonic, look at standard-velocity and subsonic loads in our .22 Long Rifle category.
